John Torpey

 

“Reparations and American Civil Religion”

 

John Torpey is a Professor of Sociology of the Graduate Center at the City University of New York as well as an author and editor of over six books. His work has appeared in Theory and Society, Sociological Theory, Journal of Modern History, Genèses: Sciences sociales et histoire, Journal of Human Rights, Telos, and New German Critique, among others. He has also published articles and book reviews in Dissent, Contexts, OpenDemocracy, Frankfurter Rundschau, The Nation, and The San Francisco Chronicle. He has held fellowships with the Hoover Chair in Economic and Social Ethics at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, the German Marshall Fund, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the European University Institute (Florence), and the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. He is the editor of the series “Politics, History, and Social Change,” published by Temple University Press. Before coming to CUNY, he taught at the University of British Columbia and the University of California, Irvine.
