“Darfur/Tsunami: humanitarian discourse and propaganda”

Dr. Rony Brauman was President of Medecins sans Frontieres (Paris) for twelve years, from 1982 through 1994. Since then he has taught at the Institut d’etudes politiques (Sciences-po) and served as Research Director at the Fondation Medecins sans Frontieres in Paris.

He has written extensively on human rights and humanitarianism and is probably the foremost, not to mention among the most forceful and intelligent, advocates *and* critics of humanitarian action in the world today. His talk at Bard raised questions about the relationship between humanitarian organizations and the media. It describes the main features of both crises in order to understand to what extent these mainstream ‘humanitarian narratives’ are related to or ignored factual observations and lessons from experience.
