How experts frame extremism: Knowledge and politics in Russia’s War on Terror

a talk by Prof. Dimitry Dubrovsky

This talk will discuss how counter-terrorism trials, in which expert witnesses in the humanities and social sciences are often called to present their research, highlight how courtrooms have become public venues for political debates between liberal and conservative academics. I will argue that these debates, in turn, reveal a broader crisis within the humanities and social sciences within Russian academia, stemming, at least in part, from Russia’s own decade-long War on Terror under Putin’s leadership.
